Foster Care for Mental Health Treatment: Parents Surrender Thousands of Kids Each Year In Search of Help

March 31, 2026 – The Meadows Institute was featured in an article in The Imprint regarding children with mental health needs and the foster care system. The Imprint is a daily news site that covers child welfare and youth justice systems.

Gary Blau, a senior fellow for children’s mental health, is interviewed for the story and discusses the “heart-wrenching decision” that some parents make to seek care by placing their children in foster care. “They did everything they could to get their child help — this included,” Blau said. “They loved and cared about their child so much that they would do anything to get them help, including relinquishing custody.”
