Grief, grit and gratitude shape rebuilding

May 7, 2026 – The Meadows Institute is featured in a story in the Hill Country Community Journal on the Rebuild Kerr Grantee Gathering hosted by the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. The meeting brought together nonprofit leaders, disaster case managers, faith leaders, and community partners to discuss recovery and rebuilding after last year’s floods.
At the event, Julie Kaplow shared the results of the Rapid Mental Health Needs Assessment for Kerr County, which was conducted by the Meadows Institute, and she spoke about the process of grief. “Society kind of tricks us into thinking that somehow after a year, we should be over it by now,” she said. “But in fact, we know that the one-year mark for most people is probably the most difficult time because it’s a reminder of the permanence of the loss.”
