San Antonio Mobile Mental Wellness Collaborative
SUMMARY – This collaborative formed in 2019 to provide free, unified mental health services directly at campuses of underserved schools where transportation remains a barrier to students finding care. Since 2022, the Meadows Institute has served as its administrative backbone and service coordination entity.
Project Details
When students from South San Antonio High School publicly pleaded with school board officials for mental health support in 2019, their voices led to the creation of the San Antonio Mental Wellness Collaborative (SAMMWC), which provides unified services to underserved school districts where transportation remains a barrier to treatment.
The program solves the transportation problem by bringing assistance straight to campuses, offering free onsite counseling services, crisis and substance use interventions, education, psychological assessments, educator trainings, wraparound services, and more at no cost to students, their families, teachers, and district staff.
Since 2022, the Meadows Institute has supported SAMMWC as the administrative backbone and service coordination entity. This includes providing strategic development and planning, financial oversight, budgeting and accounting services, legal and contractual work, program development, sustainability and replication planning, specific training, and facilitation of learning communities. The Institute also takes the lead on development of an education and training guide, partnership development and resource acquisition, and outreach and marketing.
SAMMWC nonprofits – Clarity Child Guidance Center, Endeavors, Family Service Association, JOVEN and Rise Recovery – currently support: Edgewood ISD, Harlandale ISD, Judson ISD, San Antonio ISD and South San ISD, with more districts expected to follow.
With the mental health of young people a growing and ongoing concern, programs like SAMMWC are essential to helping students and their families get the help they need, where they need it.
