SUMMARY – Beginning in October 2024, the Meadows Institute conducted a community mental health strength and needs assessment covering the counties the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation (VBLF) serves – Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy. This report summarizes the findings of the assessment and provides data-driven and actionable recommendations for sustaining an ideal mental health system in the region.
In partnership with the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, the Meadows Institute produced a community mental health strength and needs assessment. The recommendations in this report offer a roadmap to crafting, refining, and sustaining continued progress towards an ideal mental health system in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties.
In the assessment, the Meadows Institute highlighted the region’s strengths and provided recommendations for leveraging those strengths. Although examples of nationally leading best practices are increasingly available in the region, the reality is that most mental health care today is delivered without the coordinated supports fully needed to detect and treat health concerns early and effectively.
